Mineral Resources Authority Leadership Forum 2017

The Mineral Resources Authority of Papua New Guinea invited me to be a guest speaker at their 2017 Leadership Forum. The purpose of the leadership forum is to assist MRA’s senior managers to tackle the difficult issues around change and transformation in alignment with their 2021 Corporate Plan. At the forum, the group identified the most common barriers to change and shared practical approaches and tools that help leaders and managers drive change.

My presentation was entitled:

Executing Strategy: The critical role of organisational culture.

The premise of my presentation was that for an organisation to be truly successful there need to be three key factors working together:

  1. Strategy
  2. Execution
  3. Culture

An important issue to understand is that if you don’t use culture, the culture will use you. The primary example I used to illustrate outstanding corporate culture was Southwest Airlines:

  • No.8 on FORTUNE’s 2017 list of World’s Most Admired Companies
  • Among the Top 50 on Forbes’ 2017 list of America’s Best Employers

It’s interesting to appreciate the interdependence of factors, such as strategy, structure, incentives, controls, coordination, culture, and change. The complexity of the implementation process can result in managers ignoring the execution stage.
