Martini’s at two o’clock is a civilized way to work
The nine to five model of work has always aggravated my sense of creativity, innovation and worth. The best business model, for me, has always been to work smart and fast when the mind is willing and then recharge with a very dry martini while reading a book by the pool at two in the afternoon.
Parkinson said: “Work fills the available time.” And my observation of some people is that the work is deferred until the clock on the scoreboard is close to going into extra time, and then the panic rush sets in to convert a goal.
Each week, fortnight or month you may know that you habitually write a magazine column or write your email newsletter; so … do it and do it sooner rather than later. Because in addition to your marketing efforts you will need to create a client report, prepare for a presentation to a board of directors, write a talk to the local chapter of a business group, design a client survey, and engage in many client communications
Effective business consultants, coaches, and speakers avoid the ‘full-time’ pressure in the game by doing everything quickly, effectively and efficiently, leaving sufficient time for relaxation and rejuvenation; making them confident and competent to deliver exceptional work which returns dividends in the form of very satisfied clients, repeat work and recommendations to other quality clients.
- It’s a much faster way to operate your practice, and, when coupled with high-quality work, is always appreciated and respected by your client
- It impresses your client and instils confidence in your abilities, leading to referrals and recommendations as well as repeat business
- It removes unnecessary stress, pressure and anxiety
- It affords time for consideration (which is a wonderful luxury)
- It affords you time to change your mind
Being shaken by poor prioritisation and pre-planning isn’t a very civilized way to run a consulting practice. Much to the chagrin of James Bond, I prefer my martini gently stirred so as not to bruise it … with two olives.
